New Mutants Annual #4 (1988)
Evolutionary War #4
Story #1 (Mind Games)
Guest-Starring:  The Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club

Amara Aquilla (aka Magma) is captured by Gatherers so that her destructive powers can be neutralized. Her companion, Empath, called Emma Frost from Nova Roma. Frost called Magneto, Headmaster of Xavier's school. The phone conversation is overheard, and after Magneto went to the Hellfire Club, The New Mutants teleported to the base that held Amara (gotta love Magik).

Amara was saved just before her powers could be neutralized but the machine that would do it was turned on. In the fight, with lightly armed Gatherers, the team did fairly well, but then Mirage was thrown onto the 'Power Removal Machine'. What nobody saw, was that two other mutants, who were dying after their powers of resistance to radiation was removed, had switched the machine, while Mirage was on it to 'Amplify.' When she next tried her power, she could create solid creatures instead of just illusions. A limitation, one solid illusion at a time was discovered.

The fight finally ended with the arrival of the Hellfire Club, and the departure of the New Mutants. Amara was returned to Nova Roma, and the Gatherers were teleported back to their home base.

Notes:
Cool story all around, but why would there be an amplification mode to a machine that's to be used to remove powers?  This story did not have the Evolutionary underestimating the power requirements of his minions, they just weren't expecting re-enforcements for their victims.

Story #2 (If wishes Were Horses)
A story of Daniele Moonstar's new powers, the greatest desire of her flying horse (Brightwind), and a policeman that thinks she's an alien.

Notes:
Cute

Story #3 (The High Evolutionary, Chapter 4, Blood Drawn, Blood Spilt)
This story depicts the tragedy in Jonathan Drew's life (He was Wyndham's partner in the beginning). First his daughter died of radiation poisoning, then he wife fled. In the search for Merriem, Wyndham finds her after a werewolf had killed her. Drew wasn't told of the werewolf.

Notes:
The reason behind the Evolutionary's huge wealth was the fact that Mt. Wondagore was loaded with Uranium. Back in 1931 it was unknown what hazards were associated with radiation.
