Thor #417 (1990)
Only Death Can Save Thee!
Story
#1:
The story on Earth is that there is a cosmic vampire controlling a bunch
of people, including Hercules. The fights between Hercules and Thor are very
destructive to the surrounding constructions. When the vampire's control is
momentarily broken, Thor is finally able to confront him directly, when the
vampire tries to leave he is contained within Mjolnir then ejected from Earth
into the Sun.
The story in the Black Galaxy, the High Evolutionary is collecting living
matter from the bioverse that is to be combined with cell samples from Thor. The
Evolutionary goes into a slight 'Mad Scientist' rant. The Red Celestial, who has
always been present in the Black Galaxy creates a Replicoid of Thor, and sends
him towards Earth.
The story in Asgard, as the Celestial creates the Replicoid, Odin wakes from
sleep with a shout. Heimdall, Sif and the Grand Vizier, are in his chambers
instantly, but they are dismissed. Odin has had a vision of 'the final
confrontation.'
Notes:
My god there are lots of things going on. Thor and Hercules battling it out,
(which BTW is always a good fight) the High Evolutionary scheming to create a
new race of Gods, and claiming that there are no boundaries that he dare not
breach. All this and the coming of Ragnarok. Whew!
Story #2 (The Abduction!)
Dagda opens a portal from Avalon to Asgard for Leir and Caber to pass through.
Leir goes to Asgard to claim Sif for his wife, and Caber goes to be a companion
to Leir. Odin wakes with a shout (Yep same scene as described above). When Sif
returns to her chambers she finds Leir waiting there, and, naturally, a fight
breaks out. Caber, listening outside Sif's door is confronted by the Warriors
three. After Caber has run into Volstagg, Leir and Sif emerge, announcing her
acceptance.
Notes:
Dagda, Leir, and Caber are Celtic gods residing in Avalon, as such Dagda was
able to open a portal to Asgard. While Asgard cannot reach the Earth dimension,
they could have gone the circuitous rout of dimension hopping. I've always
gotten a kick out of seeing Fanderal, Volstagg and Hogun in action, no matter
how short the depiction.
