High Speed Ferry (m) Ship Name: (To be
determined)Ship Type: Twin Hulled Ferry Nationality: To be built for the US Timeline: Soon to be in service Control: Typical Speed: Typical(?) (40+ knots or 46.1+ MPH) Body: Typical Protection: Typical Offensive Capability: None Defensive Capability: None Physical Description: 300 feet long, 100 feet wide Large-capacity ferries that can cut the waves at 40-knot speeds will soon be plying American waters. The nearly 300-ft.-long ships consist of two slender, aluminum hulls connected by a bridging section. A central bow structure is at the forward end. Used extensively around the world, the first of these ships for America will be constructed for a yet-unidentified company and built at the Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, La. Bollinger says that the ship will be unique, but similar to the HMAS Jervis Bay, an Australian naval vessel. Catamaran-style ferries offer naval architects a number of advantages over conventional designs, including faster speeds and lower operating costs. They also load and unload fast, which pleases passengers. |
